What is a Network lock?

So what is a network lock? Basically, a network lock is a locking capability built into most GSM phones, giving network providers the ability to lock phones to their network. This means that you'll only be able to use sim cards for that network in the phone - it's a little cheeky if you ask us!

A network lock is a very common lock, also often referred to as a 'soft-lock'. It's a simple, but effective way for the network providers like Vodafone, Telstra, Optus, etc, to 'restrict' phones purchased through them to their network only. The benefit to accepting this imposed lock is that the prices of the phones are generally reduced. We're not big fans of network locks so speak to us about what we can do to help you get this lock removed.

There are also other types of network locks, referred to as 'hard-locks'. These are more problematic and are not as straightforward as 'soft-locks'. They generally require more complex unlocking procedures to essentially re-format the phone as a fresh phone without a lock. If you're phone is locked (either a soft or hard-lock) come in and see us or give us a call and we'll be able to quickly assess it and provide you some options or advise.
