Water / Liquid Damage
Had an unfortunate spill?
The most difficult, high risk and least understood phone damage is that caused by water/liquid corrosion. There are a huge number of reasons for water damage that we're heard over the years, so to prove you're not alone we thought we'd list just a few of the most common and some of the more interesting reasons we've heard:
- "I got caught in the rain without an umbrella"
- While driving: "The phone flew across the dashboard and out the window. Later we found it in a puddle on the side of the road"
- "My best mate spilt his drink on my phone"
- "It was a hot day, we went down to the beach and swam for a good 3 hours. Then I realised I needed to call my parents for a lift home - phone was still in my pocket"
- "I dropped it in the toilet - it happens..."
- "I was testing how 'spash-proof' it was"
Follow our 3 easy steps
While the manufacturer repair centres won't touch water damaged phones (and they're very quick to reject phones under warranty because of liquid damage), we are able to help. Depending on the type of liquid, water damage can quite easily be repaired IF the following steps are taken immediately when the damage occurs, and in the following order:
- TAKE OUT THE BATTERY! - When the battery is still connected, electric pulses are still pushed through the circuitry of the phone. It's these pulses that cause electrical shortages. If the battery is not connected, the circuit is completely broken which means that this will not happen
- Remove all excess liquid from the phone. Try blow out the water if you can
- Bring the phone in for comprehensive cleaning. While it may seem that you've managed to get rid of all the liquid, there are areas on the circuit board where the liquid will collect (and where you havent been able to get into). Without doing a comprehensive cleaning (using the correct chemical cleaning agent) the corrosion will still happen... It just may take a little longer.
